It's Drivin' Me Nuts: A Quick Look at Nut Drivers

When you need nuts and bolts loosened or tightened, you could go for your trusty wrench or ratchet and socket set, or you could go with a nut driver instead. Nut drivers are great for appliances or in situations where wrenches and ratchets would give too much torque. Nut drivers also give you a bit of a longer reach especially in tiny places. Klein Tools is probably one of the best and used by professionals in many different lines of work. One easy choice for which nut driver to buy would be the Klein Tools 32800 which is a 6 in 1 set that gets you the 3/16”, 1/4”, 5/16”, 3/8”, 7/16” and 9/16” sizes. If you’d rather have individual drivers, you can grab the Klein Tools K7 set which are all on 3 inch shafts or the Klein Tools 70200 which has 3 more drivers and also is on a 3 inch shaft. If you need a 6 inch shaft, the Klein Tools 89904 will get you 7 nut drivers. Lastly, if a more comfortable grip or magnetic ends are an important feature, you might want to look at the Klein Tools 631 and the Klein Tools 647M which is magnetic, and both sets have 7 drivers with a soft rubber grip.

Another American-made brand, Bondhus also has a couple sets, both of which have 7 pieces. The first is the Bondhus 48445 Hollow Shaft Driver which has sizes from 3/16 all the way up to ½ inch. The Bondhus 48496, on the other hand, is the metric version and has 6mm up to 12mm. Conveniently, Bondhus has colored the two drivers differently to make it easy to choose the right tool, the metrics are colored red and the inch set is colored yellow.

If you want something with a European flair, you can take a look at a few of the products that Wiha makes. Wiha’s 34791 5 piece Metric Set and Wiha 34792 6 piece SAE set have the most common sizes. They also have a more comfortable rubber grip with a handle that is more ergonomic than other brands. The Wiha 32190 is a 15 piece insulated box set that includes screwdrivers as well.
